10 Reasons You Should Follow Me on Pinterest

  1. I'm just trying to help a girl (or dude) out.  I'm terrible at asking for stuff.  Really.  I would make the worst possible salesperson..."oh you're not interested, OK, have a nice day!"  I want you to follow me because I think I can help you streamline your pins and only grab stuff that's worth pinning.
  2. I test the links!  Don't you hate it when you pin something and it goes....nowhere.  So annoying!   If the link doesn't take me back to the original post, I don't pin it.  What's the point of pinning a recipe if you don't have the recipe?  Follow me, re-pin my pins and you don't have to worry about that.
  3. I test the pins!  That's right.  I'm not just pinning my heart away.  I'm actually trying out a lot of the stuff I'm pinning.  I just started a Pinterest Project Complete! board, you can check out my "done" pins there and see what I thought.  Sometimes I also blog about things that have Pinspired me.
  4. I pin stuff any normal human can do.  I am not Martha, far from it.  I have limited time to complete projects. When I cook dinner after working 8 hours it better be easy, healthy and good.  If something looks too complicated, I probably won't pin it.
  5. My boards are organized.  Looking for a good dessert recipe?  Check out my Food! {Sweet Tooth} board. Looking for a way to cute up your kids room?  Check out my Kids Rooms board.  Want to DIY some beauty stuff?  Check out my DIY Natural Beauty board.
  6. I'm a picky pinner.  If the picture is terrible, I probably won't pin it.  Unless it is some ridiculously good sounding thing or cool easy craft, but otherwise, you won't see junk on my boards.
  7. I'm kind of a pin freak.  I pin a lot, so there is always new stuff popping up if you follow me.
  8. My pins have variety.  Looking for a new kitchen?  Like Labs?  Want some natural cleaning tips? Looking for somewhere to go?  I love food, but it's not the only thing I pin.  :)
  9. Let's get to know each other!  Otherwise, I might not see what cool stuff you're pinning, but if you follow me I will!
  10. It'll be fun!  Really, I promise.
So let's do this thing!

Pinispiration! Wall Art for The Munchkin

Hi Everyone!  I feel like life and photo editing have gotten in the way of this blog of late, my apologies!

Awhile ago I shared with you the start of a Pinspired project which I finally finished a couple of weeks ago.  If you remember, this is what Pinspired me:

The Munchkin was in serious need of some wall art for his room.  I saw this picture and thought "I can do that".  So I did!

I didn't do step by step photos, but here is some idea of my process....
I bought a pretty big canvas on sale and with a coupon from Michael's (actually, I bought two).  Using the picture above, I checked out different font in Word until I came up with something that looked close.  I then printed the numbers out big (like one per page).  Then I cut them out and taped them to my canvas (I painted the background first) and traced around them - I used my paintbrush to trace.  After tracing I filled the numbers in, still using the paintbrush.  I painted the 9 blue because if you ask The Munchkin anything about a number, the answer is always "niiiiiyyynnne" and if you ask him what color something is, the answer is always "booooooo", so this blue nine is for you Munchkin.  I used basic craft paint for the whole thing.  Everything else I painted free hand.  This is the first photo I shared...

After what took me much longer than I thought, I reveal to you the finished project!

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result.  It's not perfect, but that's OK because it's more special that I made it instead of bought it.  It looks cute in the room too.

Strangely weird things happen with photo editing and paint color, it actually looks more like the color in the photo above.  Don't ask me!

What's pinspiring you??

I shared this crafty item on the following sites, click the links for more crafty ideas!

Pinsipiration! - Recipe Find - Curried Quinoa Wraps with Avocado Citrus Slaw

I continue to be Pinspired.
The latest pinspiration were these:

Photo via Pinterest

Curried Quinoa Wraps with Avocado Citrus Slaw

The Scoop - I've been looking for a tasty lunch treat that is protein packed but meatless.  Not an easy feat.  If you are not familiar with quinoa, you can learn more about it here.  Long story short:  it is pronounced Keen-Waa; it is a protein packed grain that is cooked like rice and can be used in a variety of ways.
The Verdict - These were really tasty and filling. I made them on a Sunday to use in our lunches for the week.
The Fix - Not really a "fix", but, if I made these again I'd cut the recipe in half.  The Cyclist and I were eating these daily for nearly a week (he got two in his lunch) and we still didn't finish it all.  I was getting a little curried out by Friday.
Mentionables -

  • For the Curried Quinoa:  IDK what "Muchi Curry" is, I used plain old Spice Islands Curry Powder and it worked just fine.  I used all orange juice, as in I picked oranges off of our tree and juiced them.
  • For the "fold into cooked quinoa":  I left out the cashews because someone ate them we were out and threw in a handful of sliced almonds instead.  I thought it seemed like a lot of tahini, but the flavors came together nicely.  I did not have a tangerine, so I used a chopped up blood orange instead.  The mint added a nice flavor and I wouldn't leave it out even though it's listed as optional.  I didn't use nutritional yeast because I don't know what it is didn't have any.
  • For the Avo-Citrus Tahini Slaw:  I forgot to buy an avocado. Duh.  I used an English cucumber and extra carrots and lettuce.  I also didn't have liquid smoke, so I left that out.  An avocado probably would have been better, but this worked just fine too.
Last but not least:  If you have a giant dog that looks like this...

...don't leave your whole wheat tortilla wraps on the counter to thaw while you take a shower.
Someone might invite themselves to have a snack.

Happy lunching!

Blogging, copying & copyright: A discussion of copy-cats good & bad and how this all relates to Pinterest

I've had this thought in my mind here and there, and then I dismiss it (like we often do).  But then other things crop up that make me think of it again so now I feel like it's worth discussing.

My thought is this - Is blogging sometimes copying?

I think there are two answers to this question: yes and no.

I am new to the blogging world so maybe I am totally off-base.  That said, I think some things are purely based on principal (and just plain old good manners), so I feel strongly enough about my thoughts here to write them down for all of you to read.

When I ask Is blogging sometimes copying?  And my answer is yes and no.  What I mean is, there is "good" copying and "bad copying".

Good Copying - Think of the adage "Give credit where credit is due".  You find a recipe or something you like on another blog, you write a post about it and (most importantly) you link back to it.  This is one of the things I most love about blogging - the sharing.  Sharing of things other people are doing, making, seeing, trying, exploring and giving them the proper credit by linking back.  It's like advertising for the blogosphere.  I do it for stuff I like and I hope other people share my stuff that they like.  In fact, maybe instead of "good copying" I should be calling it "good sharing".  Either way, a great example of this is Gaby's post on Slutty Brownies made by The Londoner.  Good copying also goes for sharing of photos.  Give a link back and make it clear if it isn't yours.

Now, that said, I suppose there could be a situation where someone shares something that they think sucks.  I have never seen a blogger do this.  I personally choose to not use my blogspace for negative critique and I think this is a common theme among bloggers.  However, my personal opinion is that in blogging, we are putting our opinions, thoughts, likes, feelings (everything) out there - if somebody else thinks it sucks and wants to write about it, they are allowed to do that.  If that person is being responsible, they will also express their feelings to the writer ("hey I tried your recipe and I think it bites") giving you the option to respond; and, if they still feel the need to write about it on their own blog saying why they think it sucks, they should still link back so that their readers can form their own opinion.

Bad Copying - Think of just straight up copying someone else's post or idea and putting it up as your own.  I have seen very little obvious and/or subtle examples of this but either way, I see it happening sometimes, which is a bummer.

fat mum slim who hosts the "photoaday" round ups that I have been participating in, was very obviously copied recently and discusses it here.  I think her post (and attitude) about it is great and I totally agree with what she is saying - especially this part: "...don't steal and create a mediocre version. If you're going to steal, make a hot-diggity, brand spankin' new version with your flavour on it. Make it better. Make it bigger. Be proud of what you create."

That's totally true.  If you see someone doing something cool and you want to use that idea with your own flavor, go for it (personally, I still like to give credit to who I got the idea from too).  But here is a point I'd like to clarify, I don't think that "hot-diggity, brand spankin' new version with your flavor in it" counts if you change one minor, tiny, eentsy little thing....which brings me to example #2.

There is a cake I made and featured on this blog.  I am purposely not being direct in pointing out this copying, but if you really want to, you could find it.  Anyway, I got the cake recipe from a blog and linked back.  But later, I made the cake again, and I found it on a different blog - this blogger was who originally posted about it based on the dates.  The only difference between the recipes was that blogger #2 essentially quadrupled the amount of frosting.  The recipes were identical as was the recipe title and description.

To me, that is just lame.  If you double something or change 1/4 tsp. to 1/8 tsp., that is not your recipe!!  Granted, it's probably impossible not to sometimes accidentally "copy" someone else's recipe (look what happened to me with the Pumpkin Cookie Caper), especially considering all baked & cooked things that are similar are going to come down to similar ingredients.  BUT, I think there is a clear difference between someone's creation being similar by mistake and someone's copying being just plain obvious.

Anyway, with all of this good copying and bad copying swirling around in my head, I then heard an NPR story about the potential copyright issues of Pinterest.  They interview a blogger named Kristen Kowalski (a lawyer) who wrote a post about just that.  And, wouldn't you know it, I had "Updated Pinterest Terms" in my e-mail the next morning.

Let me start by saying thank you for pooping on our Pinterest party Kristen.  I'm not going to get into all of the legal mumbo-jumbo because that is well, boring.  Instead I'm just going to give you my opinion.  Simply, I think it would be ridiculous for someone to sue a Pinterest user for copyright infringement.  The amount of potential free advertising and/or traffic you could get from people seeing that pin would seem to far out-weigh any benefit you might get by suing.

BUT! (you were expecting that right?).  Pinterest users need to get way better at noting where the pin came from.  One of the biggest bummers for me on Pinterest is when I see something I like and I have to go through some giant chain of pins to figure out where it came from.  Personally I have taken to linking the items I pin right back to the source.  I think the "pinmarklet" is supposed to do this for you, but I don't know that it always works.  I copy/paste the web address right into the comments section of the pin.  DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A LAWYER.  Just in case you were wondering.  And, I don't know if the way I use Pinterest will avoid any copyright violations.  I'm just saying what I think, which could be wrong or right.

In the interview, NPR brought up a good question essentially asking - "have the copyright laws kept up with technology?"  Kind of not, it seems....and I wonder, is it even possible when you can simply right click on something and save or post it wherever?

Which brings me to the end.  Just be polite people.  Treat others how you would want to be treated.  Treat others stuff how you would want your stuff treated.  Bad copying is no bueno and in the end, it just makes you look bad.  Even though the blogosphere is huge, it is also kind of small.  Someone, somewhere will notice.  Give credit where credit is due.  Have fun, keep sharing and relax.  Let's enjoy the blogosphere together.

Rant end.

Pinspiration! Recipe Find - Goat Cheese, Lemon, Arugula & Pea Pasta

Pinterest is becoming my new go to spot for recipes.
I think it might be easier to find stuff there than doing a Google search.
Really.

Here is one I came across the other day -

Goat cheese, lemon arugula and pea pasta
Yum, right?
I grabbed what I needed and decided to try it out.
The Scoop - This was super easy to make.  It will definitely be a go-to recipe for when I want to make something tasty in a little bit of time.  I also have never thought of throwing peas into the pasta water so this is another idea I'm sure to copy in other recipes.
The Verdict - The pasta was rich and creamy with a nice lemon flavor; the arugula and peas added a nice contrast.  The goat cheese makes a really thick coating on the pasta - I tasted it and immediately said "it's like adult mac and cheese".
The Fix - Not that it really needs fixing, but.  If you're a goat cheese eater you know how thick and creamy it is.  Both The Cyclist & I agreed that this dish would be nicely balanced with the addition of something salty - he said prosciutto, I said spicy turkey sausage; either one will do. Also, I might add a bit of milk to the mix, just to cut the thickness quality of the melted goat cheese.
Mentionables - I'm not sure if adding more lemon might also cut the goat cheese thickness.  I'm also not sure if the lemon flavor would be lost by adding prosciutto or spicy turkey sausage (that would be a shame, the lemon flavor is really good).  A dry white wine would be really good with this.

Here is my finished product...

Bon Appetite!

Pinspiration! Recipe Finds

Photo via Pinterest
The Scoop - I was excited when I found this recipe because it looked so much tastier (and healthier) than most crock-pot dishes.  Also, I thought it would be a great meal for the night I do my FIT track workout.  I made it and I was dying to come home and eat it.
The Verdict - Dare I say it was a little bit....bland?!  Seems weird right?!  With such savory and colorful spices like turmeric I didn't think bland was possible.  But it was hearty and tasty after a long workout.
The Fix - If you make this, add more of the spice blend and more salt and some pepper.
Mentionables - I did not use thighs, because I only had boneless skinless breasts; this switch worked fine and the chicken was nice and juicy.  I didn't use the canned corn cobs, instead I got a frozen veggie blend from Trader Joe's that already had the corncobs and some other good stuff

Photo via Pinterest

The Scoop - Wow was this good!  I can't wait to make this pesto for a bunch of other stuff.  The flavor of it really made the pizza.  I've also never roasted eggplant and I like this method a lot for a quick cook.
The Verdict - YUM!  I will totally make this again.
Mentionables - I didn't use naan, instead I made this on a fresh (not pre-cooked) pizza crust and made one big pizza instead of individuals.  I also didn't use fresh mozzarella (although that would have been amazing), instead I used what I had which was basic shredded mozzarella.  Last, we had some prosciutto, so I topped it with a bit of that.  We thought the salty-ness of the prosciutto added to the overall flavor.
Disclaimer - I didn't find this on Pinterest.  I found it on the blog and pinned it to Pinterest myself.

Lemon & Dill Chicken
The Scoop - I bought dill at the farmer's market and I had a bunch of tasty Meyer lemons in my fridge, so I was looking for something to make.  I searched "lemon, dill" on Pinterest and this popped up.    The Verdict - This was a healthy recipe and it was tasty.  The Cyclist is not a fan of dill, but he liked this a lot.  Mine did not look like the picture, but still tasted good.
The Fix - You may not need this fix but.....my sauce wasn't thickening as I thought it should, so I added a few sprinkles of Wondra.
Mentionables - Pinterest wasn't the first place I looked.  I searched the same thing on the Whole Food's recipe app and all I was coming up with were seafood dishes.  I knew I wanted to use chicken and I thought it was weird I couldn't find any "chicken, lemon, dill" recipes.....but there on Pinterest it popped right up.

Pinspiration

If you have not been on Pinterest yet, you need to check it out!  Pinterest is an on-line pin-board.  You can download their "pinmarklet" and use it to pin images from around the web.  You can also re-pin what you see on Pinterest.  You can organize your pins by creating specific boards to put them on.  Here is a screen shot of my Pinterest page....

I have a habit of collecting ideas and recipes but not always trying them out.  My recipe binder is a good example of this.....overflowing with recipes I haven't tried yet, but I keep adding to it!  Pinterest is just another (prettier) version of this.

I have a few Pinterest projects in the works and I've tried a recipe from the site.  But now I am totally inspired to share them all with you thanks to Delighted Momma and her Pintester series.  So for these reasons I bring you my own Pinterest feature.....

Are you feeling Pinspired?  Good!  So am I.  From now on if I make a Pinterest recipe, complete a Pinterest inspired project or travel to a Pinspired locale, I'll be sharing it here with the Pinspiration tag!  If you have your own Pinterest inspired goodies, please share them with me and the blogosphere!!

Here is a peek at something that Pinspired me....

Bedroom art (for a child)

...it is in the works!  I can't wait to share the finished product, but here is a peek....

...when I debut it I'll explain why my "nyiiiinnnneee" is "boooooooo", but some of you out there already know.

Thangs

In case you were wondering.....but maybe you weren't....but I'll tell you anyway.

I've been missing from the blogosphere for the last couple of days!  But.  I learned how to add code and the nifty little buttons to the right.  Now you can link my Facebook page, Twitter and RSS feed just by pressing the button.  I felt like the sidebar was getting cluttered so I fixed it up.  I have to send a big THANK YOU to Alicia for this post which was so incredibly helpful.  Now that I think I am a super code writer, those buttons will probably change up until I find some that I super like, but the basics are good for now.

Also, I have made another change on the little bloggy.  When I started this shindig, I made a conscious decision that I would not use this space to be negative.  There is too much of that in the world.  This is a happy spot.  I do enjoy reviewing things though, so initially when sharing recipe's I called them "Recipe Review(s)" and put them under the "Recipe Review" tab up above.  But, since I'm not really reviewing, but more sharing a good find, I've changed the tab and the titles to "Recipe Finds".  From now on that's what I'll be calling it when I share a recipe from someone else on the blog.  I will continue to use Yelp to do actual reviews, good and bad (but trust me, it has to be really really bad for me to actually put it in writing).

Did you see the Farmer's Market Live post?  This was a brilliant idea of friend & fellow blogger Eek! - Slurpees in spandex.  I'm going to do these as often as possible.  If you live in the area you can get a peep of what's at the market that morning.  Sweet.  Thanks Em!

Have you seen Pinterest?  It's nifty.  You can see what I'm pinning by pressing the button to the right....

I'm beginning to forget who Old Lady and the Computer is.

Oh yeah.  So, I don't promise to stop nerding out but I do promise to get back to real blog posts.

Until then!
