Top 13 of 2013

Can you believe this year is about to end?  This has been the most busy, crazy, changing, adventure filled, goal completing, traveled year yet.  As we said on our Christmas card, this year we:

Remodeled, Graduated, Sold, Packed, Moved,
Went to Idaho, Went to Montana, Went to Wyoming,
Went to Oregon, Went to Washington, Packed Again,
Moved Again, Got Hired.....we are still unpacking.
We look forward to any adventures that 2014 will bring!

It's a miracle that in all this chaos I was able to do a few blog posts.  With that I bring you the top 13 of 2013!

Everyone loves a giveaway.  It was a pleasure working with Minted on this one.

I'm happy this one made the list because I love sharing.  Plus it featured a recipe from a local blogger - A Girl and her Fork.

This one makes me giggle a bit, but I guess everyone is in for a simple, tasty and cute recipe.

This is my personal favorite post of the year.  I still cannot explain how proud I am of my mom.  I'm more proud of her in this moment than in any other race.  I hope she comes back next year. (She is on the mend!)

A post from early on in the year before all the crazy moving madness started.  This is also one of my first posts using my big girl camera.  Oh what a difference (thanks honey).

I'm glad everyone liked this crafty post because I have some more crafty things coming for 2014!

Apparently when I really open my mouth sometimes people like to listen!  I'm surprised this one is on the list, but lots of people had opinions about old Lance.  I stick by mine.

We still love this granola and it still disappears quickly upon being made.  This is a great recipe if I don't say so myself.

5.  Crystal Cove {Newport Beach, CA}
This one was also a surprise to me.  I'm glad you liked it because we sure did.  Such a beautiful and quaint place.

4.  Strawberries, Margaritas and Mom's
Wow, my mom is doing good this year!  Two posts and both well read.  Can't say I'm surprised. This was a fun day and that strawberry margarita tart was tasty!

3.  Kitchen Re-Model Phase 2 - Bye Bye Betty Draper!
Well, all of our hard work paid off in more ways than one.  We challenged ourselves, completed the goal and you liked it too, thanks!

2.  Chicken Pot Pie ♥ The Heart Healthy Way ♥
Oh my yummy.  I need to make this again STAT.

1.  Dinner Makeover {Cheeseburger, Fries + Shake}
Ahh, my first whole meal post.  I am most thrilled with that banana shake.  So delicious!

Happy New Year friends!  Best wishes to you and yours!

Kitchen Remodel Phase 2 - Bye Bye Betty Draper!

Oh how I have been waiting to share this post with you!!  I can't tell you how much I have been LOVING our new kitchen.  It makes me a bit sad to leave, but I am still so excited for our new adventures to come. And....considering The Cyclist is this handy I see yet more renovations in our future.  Are you reading this Cyclist?

We actually started this project back in 2011, when we completed Phase 1.  Although I shared with you back then that we suffered from a Betty Draper kitchen but I didn't share all the details.

So HERE. GOES!

Seriously, I am so excited.  Can you feel it?!  OK, I'll stop typing now!

Not.  Even.  Kidding.

By the way, remember how I said our old kitchen was like Betty Draper's?  I actually think hers was nicer!

Anyway, let's keep looking at the before & after's shall we?

And just after....

This has been one crazy ride!  I think we are both shocked at how good it turned out.  I mentioned yesterday we are selling our house, so if you want this kitchen to be yours, shoot me an e-mail and I will send you the details.

I also have to give photo credit for most of these beautiful shots to Dale Charles at Compago, who our Realtor hired to take the shots.

Now, I will go create things in this kitchen before it is no longer mine!

I'm baa-aack! Well.....sort of + a private beer tasting

Hello Blogworld and friends! Oh how I've missed you.

I last said hello a couple of weeks ago when our kitchen looked like this...

YOWZA.

I'm happy to tell you that we have made quite a bit of progress since then.  If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen this sneak peek...

Let me just say this has been quite the endeavor.  To be honest there were times it was a miracle it didn't end in divorce.  However, there is a good reason that The Cyclist and I decided to take on this project in the middle of his last semester of school, but I'll share more on that later.

For now, let me give credit where credit is due.  Even though this is a project "we" took on, I am not handy. This was primarily the work of The Cyclist with me helping where I was able....even when that meant occupying The Munchkin while our house was in disarray, which is a way better job and I know it.  The efforts of my hubs here are truly admirable and I am a lucky wife.  I lack words to explain how thankful I am not only for this kitchen, but many other things.  So THANK YOU Cyclist!

In other thank you's, we had the help of friends and parents as well, which was truly invaluable.  A big shout out to our own personal wood whisperer, Mr. F for being a huge, gigantic help.  For reals.  Thanks, all of you for everything.

In case you are now sick of me blubbering thank you's over our kitchen and bummed that I'm not showing before and after photos today (coming soon to a blog near you!), let's talk about beer.

Yes beer.

A midst the chaos of our kitchen, Mr. F's wife suggested we hit a private beer dinner at OneSpeed, a favorite restaurant in our hood.  This was a brilliant idea that gave us a much needed break.

OneSpeed paired up with The Brewing Lair of the Lost Sierras for the dinner.  The Lair itself looks like a sweet place and I'm excited to make a trip up there, but until then, let's talk about their beer and of course, food.

Let's start at the beginning, shall we?

Antipasto - A selection of tasty, savory things to rev up your palate & appetite.  Served with Uncle Elliot's, IPA.

We were actually greeted at the door with Uncle Elliot's IPA and mingled for a bit before sitting down to enjoy these tasty appetizers.  Obviously we have a deviled egg there, but I seriously can't remember what the other starter is!  Sorry, I should have taken notes.  My brain is saying it was some type of liverwurst, but that sounds gross and it was good so...?  I leave it to you to guess or comment.  We were also served a mini hot dog in honor of baseball's opening day.  It is not photographed because I ate it.

Let's forget about my transgressions and talk about the first course, OK?

1st Course - Crispy Fried Oyster Slider, Spicy Gulf Shrimp Mayo, Watercress, Fennel, Bacon-Onion Jam, Citronette.  Served with Ambush, IPA.

They had me at fried oyster but add in all that other good stuff (bacon onion jam?!) and this may have been my favorite thing of the night.  I tend to favorite things I can't make at home.  I am not good at frying, so I had a soft spot for this dish.  The bite of the Ambush IPA was a nice compliment.

Because OneSpeed pizza is a thing, of course there was a pizza course.....of course!

Pizza - Sopressata, Fiscallini Farms San Joaquin Gold Aged Cheese, Greens, New Potatoes, Spring Onions, Olives & Chile Oil.  Served with Incognito, Saison.

Sopressata is an Italian dry salami.  I found it to be mild as far as salami is concerned and it was a nice compliment to all of the other delicious items on the pizza.  The chili oil gave it a nice kick.  The Brewing Lair describes Espionage Ale as "a Red IPA with floral hoppy-ness and caramel malts".

It's totally normal to eat an entree after enjoying appetizers, a fried slider and pizza right?
Just checking.

Entree - Braised Shoulder and Shank of Yolo County Lamb, House Made Egg Noodles, English Peas, Asparagus, Spring Carrots, Rosemary and Salsa Verde.  Served with Odd Job, Brown Ale.

This dish was local and good, after everything, I still ate it all.  The Odd Job was one of my favorite beers of the night.

It would be a crime to not add dessert to this madness, so....

Dessert - Ricotta Cheesecake, Candied Hazelnuts, Espresso Caramel and Valrhona Cocoa Powder.  Served with Stake Out, Coffee Stout.

I am not a huge fan of cheesecake.  Don't get me wrong, I like it, it's just not on the top of my dessert fav's. This one was light (my guess is because of the ricotta), which was nice after all the food and beer already consumed   My favorite part were the candied hazelnuts   The Stake Out Coffee Stout was super coffee infused.  I don't know how I would like it on its own, but with this dish it was really good.

So that is it!  I hope to have a before and after kitchen post soon, but you can bet I won't be showing you until all of the final final touches are complete!  In the meantime, there has been some good food generated from that kitchen already, but because we are still hard at work, my posts may continue to be a bit sporadic.  :(

I miss you all and I hope to be back on the regular soon!  Thank you for your patience!

Kitchen Remodel Phase 1 & Training Update

Like  many Americans, we suffer from an ugly kitchen.  It was #1 on the list of things to do-over, but before we got to it our shower decided it would leak....all the way to the outside wall of our house....so the bathroom got done first.  Then we got excited and put in all new doors, bamboo floors, base boards, tile, paint, light fixtures and fans...then said, "oops, I guess we'll have to wait awhile before we do the kitchen".

It is at this point that I must say I am very happy to have a handy husband who is able to do lots of this stuff (he gets credit for pretty much everything listed above) and happy to have friends of husband who often work for beer and food.  This was the first project that I also really (truly) had a hand in that counted for something more than dawdling so not only can I say "check out what we did", I can also appreciate the tediousness and time it takes to finish stuff like this.  Thank you husband/Cyclist for all your hard work in this project and all the others.  I ♥ you.

So, like I said, our kitchen is ugly.  You won't really get the ugliness of it until we tackle Phase 2, but you will start to get an idea.  I originally thought somebody re-modeled our mid 50's kitchen in the 70's and put in the funky wood cabinets with copper handles, but after watching Mad Men I surmised that someone actually must have put these in originally.  Seriously, Betty could really be standing in our kitchen in this photo:

The similarities are eerie.

We started with the dining side of the kitchen which included a "peninsula" (thank you Mr. F) which we called an "island" like the one Betty is standing next to above.

The Cyclist got going a tad before I said, "Stop!  Take pictures!", but you get the idea....

and....

Ta-Da!  AFTER.

I should point out this was not just as easy as tearing out the ugly cabinet and replacing it with this nifty breakfast bar from IKEA.  It included putting in new tile too...

....(you are catching a glimpse of ugly kitchen here)....
My only "final" picture of the tile is the AFTER photo above, but you get the idea.

In addition to putting in the new breakfast bar, we also painted.

...and...

Gotcha!  Another BEFORE ↑

and...wait for it....

The black wall that you see is actually a magnetic chalkboard.  We put this in for The Munchkin and DD, which we thought would be fun.  We used magnet paint (yes they make this!  Crazy huh?) and then chalkboard paint.  It was pretty time consuming since I think we ended up doing 3 coats of each, but it turned out good and it is fun.  I believe we decided we will be doing another wall in the kitchen with chalkboard paint too, but you'll have to wait for us to get started and finished before you will see!

Last but not least, training update.  Not much has changed.  The week before last I managed to ride to work everyday, do my Monday night ride and swim.  Last week I rode just about everyday, did my Monday night ride and swam.  I rode today too, but I think I'll be shifting some stuff up this week.  The ladies at the Rio BBQ filled me in on a women's group ride Tuesday's that I'm going to try and get in on.  I'm nervous about my crappy bike handling skills, but The Cyclist assures me that I'll be fine.  So hopefully soon I'll have more to report than "I did the same thing as last week".  The good news is, I've been fairly consistent, so that's always a plus.

Last week I promised the Mystery Garden and it is still coming!  I also have a race report and some other good stuff, so, stay tuned!
